Political dispute involving President Trump, Marc Elias and an alleged Alaska ballot scheme

Trump DOJ Targets Marc Elias, 20 Democrats Over Alleged Decoy Scheme

The Trump Justice Department has reportedly sent criminal target letters to 20 Democrats in connection with an investigation into an alleged effort to confuse Alaska voters. Among those named is Marc Elias, a longtime Democratic attorney and vocal opponent of President Trump. The matter centers on a candidate who shared the name of Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, creating a ballot situation that sounds less like ordinary campaigning and more like political mischief with paperwork. Apparently, even a Senate race can be turned into a name-recognition experiment.

Prosecutors are examining whether Democratic operatives connected to Mary Peltola’s campaign recruited Daniel J. Sullivan and helped present him as “Dan S. Sullivan,” the name of the incumbent senator. The alleged purpose was to place a spoiler candidate on the ballot and confuse voters. The source account says operatives worked to register a man named Daniel J. Sullivan under that name as a Republican challenger. That is a remarkably elaborate route to create confusion, especially when a normal campaign usually starts with a candidate and ends with a campaign, not a ballot identity puzzle.

The New York Times reported that the plan involved traveling to “far-flung Alaskan communities and the appearance of a mysterious Midwestern operative, who traversed the state using a fake name and made his pitch to would-be candidates over beers at brew pubs.” The Times reported: “The plan worked. This spring, a retired teacher from a tiny fishing village along the Alaska Panhandle, reachable only by air and sea, announced his candidacy for Senate. His name was Dan J. Sullivan,”

Federal prosecutors have issued more than 100 subpoenas. The investigation is being led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Alaska and also involves prosecutors from the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division’s criminal section, according to CBS News. CBS reported that Elias is one of several people who received target letters, preservation letters or grand jury subpoenas. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee separately received a grand jury subpoena, a law enforcement source told the network. Approximately 20 target and preservation letters have been issued to date, CBS reported.

Elias has rejected the allegations and attacked the administration’s motives. “No one should be surprised that President Trump’s Department is targeting me and my law firm on Election Day,” Elias said in a statement to CBS News. “This administration has repeatedly weaponized the DOJ against the President’s political enemies despite zero evidence of wrongdoing, and we are the latest targets.”

That accusation puts the political battle in plain view. Elias says the investigation is retaliation against opponents of President Trump, while the Justice Department’s actions show prosecutors are treating the alleged ballot operation as a criminal matter worthy of subpoenas and target letters. The core question is whether the name-matching strategy was an intentional effort to confuse voters or something less coordinated. No verdict or finding of wrongdoing is described in the report, but the investigation has plainly expanded beyond campaign gossip.

A candidate with the same name as an incumbent, a registration using a matching label, a reported recruitment effort and more than 100 subpoenas are not minor details. They are the reason this inquiry has drawn attention, especially with Elias and other Democrats now facing formal steps from federal investigators. The lawyers can argue over motives, and Elias can defend his record. Meanwhile, prosecutors are following the allegations through the investigative process, which is what voters expect when a reported ballot scheme raises this many questions.
