White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was recently seen getting her feathers ruffled over a simple question…again. Now, I don’t know about you, but when a reporter asks why Joe Biden seems to rely heavily on note cards during public appearances, I’d expect a straightforward answer. But, nope. Not in this administration, the administration of “transparency”.
Jean-Pierre was visibly unsettled when this question was raised during a recent press briefing. The nerve of that reporter, right? Daring to ask why the President of the United States needs note cards to converse with the Italian Prime Minister or while addressing border issues. The audacity!
“The President, I noticed, had note cards at the border when he was doing his briefing there. He also had note cards last Friday with the Italian Prime Minister. Why does the President rely so heavily on note cards?” the reporter asked. A fair question, if you ask me. But apparently, not to Jean-Pierre.
“You’re upset because the President has note cards? You’re asking me a question about the President having note cards?” she retorted. It’s almost like she’s offended that anyone would dare question the cognitive abilities of our dear President.
Jean-Pierre then defensively chimed, “The President has had, probably one of the most successful first three years of an administration than any modern-day president. He’s done more in the first three years than most presidents who had two terms. You’re asking me about note cards?” Oh, where do I even begin with this?

First off, I’m not sure what administration Jean-Pierre is referring to, but it certainly can’t be the disaster we’ve been witnessing for the past three years. And secondly, yes, we are asking about the note cards. Because when you’re the leader of the free world, people kind of expect you to be able to speak off the cuff.
But hey, maybe I’m just old-fashioned. Maybe it’s totally normal for a president to rely on note cards during public appearances and private fundraising events. Maybe we should all just accept that this is the new normal. After all, who needs a president with a sharp mind and quick wit when we can have one who reads off note cards?
Keep those note cards coming though. Because nothing says ‘strong leadership’ like a president who can’t speak without a script. And to Jean-Pierre, I say this: If you can’t handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Or in this case, the press room.
