Kamala Harris had a rough time Monday night as she faced off with CBS reporter Bill Whitaker in a tense exchange over the southern border crisis. The question was simple: why has the number of illegal border crossings skyrocketed under her watch? But Harris’s response was a master class in dodging, deflecting, and ultimately failing to address the issue.
Whitaker, who wasn’t about to let her off easy, pressed Harris on why it took the administration three and a half years to reverse course on its border policies. Harris launched into a lengthy monologue, blaming President Trump for torpedoing an immigration bill in Congress. According to Harris, a bipartisan effort to tackle the border was derailed after Trump allegedly urged his party to kill the bill, choosing instead to run on the border crisis as a campaign issue. But Whitaker wasn’t buying it and pointed out that the border situation has deteriorated significantly under the current administration.
For anyone hoping Harris might finally take some responsibility, her response was a letdown. Instead of addressing Whitaker’s questions directly, she doubled down on the blame game. While Whitaker acknowledged that the border problems didn’t start with Biden’s administration, he pressed Harris on why they worsened so dramatically on her watch. But instead of a straightforward answer, Harris threw out lines about needing Congress to act and touted supposed “solutions” her administration has proposed.
When pressed specifically about whether loosening immigration policies in their first year was a mistake, Harris sidestepped. She claimed that her administration had been offering solutions from “day one,” but Whitaker wasn’t having it. He repeated that crossings had quadrupled, asking her point-blank if the administration’s policy changes had been a mistake. Harris’s response was nothing short of baffling: “Because of what we have done, we have cut the flow of illegal immigration by half.” To anyone paying attention, this claim seemed wildly out of touch with reality.

Harris dodges, blames Trump (shocker), and pivots to an amnesty bill, but never explains the 3-year delay during record chaos.

The whole ordeal showcased why so many Americans question whether Harris is ready for the big leagues. She had a chance to own up to the administration’s failures or at least offer a coherent response, but instead, she stuck to talking points that didn’t address the gravity of the crisis. Whitaker’s persistence exposed Harris’s evasions, leaving viewers with more questions than answers. With Election Day on the horizon, Harris’s performance is unlikely to inspire much confidence, especially from voters fed up with the administration’s handling of border security.
