Former FBI Director James Comey was escorted by U.S. Secret Service agents to their Washington Field Office on Friday afternoon as part of an ongoing investigation into a cryptic and highly controversial social media post that many believe called for violence against President Trump.
Federal law enforcement sources confirmed that Comey, 64, was taken from his Northern Virginia home just before 6 p.m. in a quiet but deliberate operation. Footage obtained by CNN showed Comey walking calmly with agents — a scene that enraged many who noted the stark contrast between his treatment and that of ordinary Americans who’ve made far less provocative online statements.

At the center of the controversy is Comey’s now-deleted Instagram post, featuring a beach photo with seashells arranged to spell out “8647.” The interpretation? “86” is common slang meaning to “get rid of” or, in some contexts, to “kill,” while “47” refers to President Trump, who is now serving his second term as the 47th President of the United States. The not-so-subtle combination sparked outrage across conservative circles and serious concern within federal agencies.
Comey later issued a statement claiming ignorance, writing, “It never occurred to me, but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.” A claim met with widespread skepticism.
“The Secret Service vigorously investigates anything that can be taken as a potential threat against our protectees,” said agency spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi. “We are aware of the social media posts by the former FBI director and we take rhetoric like this very seriously.”
Though no charges have yet been filed, the decision lies with Attorney General Pam Bondi. President Trump weighed in Friday, saying, “Any decision on whether charges should be filed would be up to Attorney General Bondi,” but added, “He knew what he was doing. Everyone knows what 86 means.”
National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard also addressed the situation, telling Fox News host Jesse Watters, “This cannot be brushed aside. There have already been two assassination attempts against President Trump. This kind of rhetoric puts a target on his back.”
Independent journalist Drew Hernandez put it bluntly: “Comey got a comfy little escort. If this were any of us, we’d have had a 5 a.m. raid and been in a cell by sundown.”
As the investigation continues, one thing is clear — the days of two-tiered justice are being challenged head-on.
