House Speaker Nancy Pelosi didn’t mince words during her interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday, when she forcefully rebuked his question about President Trump’s latest attack on Kamala Harris. Trump, speaking at a rally in Savannah, Georgia, had claimed that Harris has “bigger cognitive problems” than Joe Biden, taking another swipe at the Biden-Harris administration’s leadership.
At the rally, Trump also blasted the administration’s handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, criticizing the loss of military equipment and the tragic deaths of 13 servicemembers. However, his remarks about Harris dominated the headlines, particularly his assertion that she faces greater cognitive challenges than Biden, who recently stepped back from the 2024 race amid scrutiny over his own mental fitness.
When Tapper brought up Trump’s comments during the interview, Pelosi quickly turned the tables, questioning why the network would even entertain such rhetoric. “Why would you even cover that?” Pelosi shot back. “This is a person who’s not on the level. He is a nominee for president. He is incompetent. Let’s not even talk about the silliness of it all and the weirdness of it all and the assault on women that it is.”
Pelosi wasn’t having any of it. To her, Trump’s comments weren’t just a cheap political jab—they were part of what she sees as a broader “assault on women,” a narrative she has repeatedly employed when defending female leaders from what she views as sexist attacks. Pelosi emphasized that engaging with Trump’s remarks would only serve to distract from the real issues facing the country.
“We’re not going to talk issues,” Pelosi continued, dismissing Trump’s attacks as distractions rather than substantive criticism. From her perspective, focusing on these personal attacks detracts from discussing policy and solutions.

On the other side, Trump has continued to make cognitive health a central talking point in his campaign rhetoric, casting doubt on both Biden’s and Harris’ fitness to lead. His attacks on Harris, however, come as she steps into an even more prominent role within the Democratic Party following Biden’s exit from the 2024 race.
