Kamala Harris’ political career may have taken a significant hit after her resounding defeat in the 2024 presidential election, but the conversation about her future in the Democratic Party continues unabated. Despite widespread criticism of her performance as vice president and presidential candidate, some insist she remains a viable contender for future leadership roles, thanks to the Democratic Party’s lack of strong alternatives.
Fox News contributor Tammy Bruce weighed in on Harris’ position during an appearance on Varney & Co., offering a blunt assessment of the former vice president’s appeal—or lack thereof. According to Bruce, Harris benefits less from her own political skills and more from the Democratic Party’s “weak bench.”
“Some people are professional candidates. Now, she has won office, right? I mean, she has done well, inexplicably,” Bruce said. “It continues to concern me that she received as many votes as she did, but that is something that the legacy media contributes to, and party loyalty contributes to.”
Bruce argued that as long as the Democratic Party lacks a deep roster of capable leaders, Harris could remain prominent. “If the Democratic bench expands, if Democrats vote people in who know what they’re doing and can explain a vision, then the value of someone like Kamala Harris or the appeal of her will wane,” she added.
Harris has reportedly been keeping her options open for the future. According to Politico, she has instructed her advisers to explore potential political opportunities, including a gubernatorial run in California in 2026 or even another presidential bid in 2028. Her inner circle says she remains determined to stay politically active, frequently reiterating, “I am staying in the fight.”
Critics, however, argue that Harris’ political missteps—ranging from her perceived failures in handling the border crisis to her lackluster debate and campaign performances—make her a liability for Democrats seeking a strong leader. Even Bruce suggested Harris’ future success might hinge on a limited pool of competition within her party.
Harris’ supporters, however, remain optimistic, citing her ability to connect with key Democratic demographics and her experience in California’s political scene. Whether she will re-emerge as a viable candidate in the years to come or fade into political obscurity will depend on both the Democrats’ willingness to cultivate new talent and Harris’ ability to adapt to shifting political dynamics.
For now, her future remains uncertain, with Democrats weighing her political baggage against the need for a leader who can galvanize a struggling party.
