In a masterclass of irony and self-unawareness, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) found himself the target of online mockery this week after attempting to pile on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over a supposed national security lapse. Swalwell, whose own name is forever tied to the Chinese spy Christine Fang (a.k.a. “Fang Fang”), questioned why Hegseth hadn’t resigned yet over claims that he shared war plans in a Trump administration group chat — a chat that apparently included a liberal journalist by mistake.
“Wait. Pete Hegseth hasn’t resigned yet?” Swalwell wrote on X, clearly attempting to score points off the latest left-wing outrage du jour. What he got instead was a flood of reminders that maybe, just maybe, the guy who allegedly dated a literal Chinese spy isn’t the best spokesperson for national security concerns.
Chaya Raichik, better known as the founder of Libs of TikTok, delivered the perfect clapback: “Didn’t you bang a Chinese spy???” Ouch. That one echoed across the timeline. Others joined in with surgical precision.

Did you resign after you boinked a Chinese spy?

Why didn't you resign when you were face-deep in Fang Fang, the CCP spy?

Swalwell’s history with Christine Fang — a woman believed to have been working with Chinese intelligence — became public in 2020. Fang targeted up-and-coming California Democrats, including Swalwell, as part of a broader Chinese influence operation. While the House Ethics Committee eventually cleared Swalwell of wrongdoing in 2023, the optics of the whole thing were never quite washed off. And let’s be honest, no amount of press releases or spin will ever erase the phrase “Chinese spy girlfriend” from his political résumé.
This week’s dust-up follows a media frenzy over a supposed “leak” of non-classified military discussions by Secretary Hegseth, who has been instrumental in supporting President Trump’s efforts to clean out the politicized Pentagon. The media predictably went into meltdown mode, claiming a national security breach of epic proportions. But as White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified, the report was built on “sensationalist spin,” and no classified material was exposed.
Still, the Democrats are doing what they do best — screaming “crisis” every time someone from Team Trump breathes. Hakeem Jeffries called the leak “outrageous,” and Chuck Schumer, desperate to shift focus from his own internal mutiny, labeled it “stunning.”
But in the end, the real punchline was Swalwell’s attempt to play national security hall monitor — and getting dunked on by the entire internet instead.
