Elon Musk’s New Vow Leaves the Deep State Trembling

At Trump’s recent rally in Madison Square Garden, Elon Musk took the stage and sent shockwaves through the crowd with his fiery promise to cut down on federal spending waste, which he claims is bleeding American taxpayers dry. Musk, who was introduced by Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick, announced his intention to slash up to $2 trillion from what he called “waste” in the federal budget. And when Musk said he’d do this through a new “Department of Government Efficiency,” the crowd at MSG roared, with chants of “E-lon! E-lon!” filling the arena.

This idea of a government efficiency commission—known as “D.O.G.E.” in a clever play on Musk’s favorite meme coin—has become a rallying cry for Trump’s campaign since he endorsed it in August. According to The Western Journal, Musk’s D.O.G.E. initiative has ignited a social media firestorm, with related accounts and hashtags surging in popularity on X, Musk’s own platform. One popular clip of Musk’s MSG speech on the account “DogeDesigner” has already garnered close to a million views.

Musk didn’t mince words. “Your money is being wasted,” he said. “We’re gonna get the government off your back and out of your pocketbook.” For a country facing inflation, rising costs, and a $6.5 trillion federal budget under the Harris-Biden administration, Musk’s promise to tackle bloated spending struck a chord. He noted that the wealthiest counties in America are concentrated around D.C., home to many who’ve grown rich off taxpayers without lifting a finger in the private sector. In fact, a report by U.S. News & World Report highlighted that five of the top ten wealthiest counties in the country surround Washington, D.C. This consolidation of wealth among government insiders was cited as evidence of what Musk and Trump call “deep state” corruption.

The Western Journal compared Musk’s proposal to an “1800s-style revolution,” aiming to overhaul principles of government spending and accountability. Trump’s plan to empower Musk to lead this budgetary cleanup could, if enacted, shake up the status quo in Washington—a city that, as Musk pointed out, sees federal spending and taxation as its personal piggy bank.

Trump’s base and fiscal conservatives alike are thrilled at the prospect of a spending crackdown. But if Musk and Trump make it to the White House, they’re sure to face fierce opposition from those entrenched in D.C.’s system of influence and wealth. Musk’s speech at Madison Square Garden didn’t just make waves—it set the stage for what could be one of the biggest showdowns over government waste and “deep state” power in recent history.
