In what seems like the latest episode of the long-running saga “Democrats vs. Trump,” U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) has thrown a new curveball that could strip former President Donald Trump of his Secret Service protection if he’s convicted in his trial. It appears that the political theater we’ve all come to know (and maybe not love) is adding yet another act to its repertoire, and this time, it’s security—or the lack thereof—that’s taking center stage.
The legislation, dubbed by Thompson with the rather dramatic title of the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable (DISGRACED) Former Protectees Act, aims to ensure that any person sentenced to prison for a year or more following a conviction would lose their Secret Service protection. Thompson, who notably chaired the controversial January 6 Committee, argues that current laws don’t account for how Secret Service protection would intersect with a convict’s sentence, even if that convict is a former President.

Now, let’s call a spade a spade. While the bill doesn’t mention Trump by name, it’s as clear as day who the target is. Thompson himself points to Trump’s “unprecedented 91 felony charges” as the catalyst for this legislative proposal. Critics, however, see this as another chapter in the ongoing effort to undermine Trump, particularly given his status as a leading Republican figure and his trials in what they describe as “deep blue New York City.”
Speaking of New York City, the trial there has been a hotbed of controversy, with the Manhattan D.A. stretching the statute of limitations and upgrading charges in ways that have left legal experts scratching their heads. And let’s not forget the judge with a history of donating to Joe Biden—because, of course, that’s just icing on the cake of impartiality, right?
Stripping Trump of Secret Service protection could leave him vulnerable to assassination attempts, underscoring the potential risks of removing security from a figure as polarizing as Trump, but that’s exactly what they want.
