President Trump continues to make waves in South Florida. Miami-Dade County, Florida’s largest and most populous county, has decided to honor the 45th and 47th President of the United States by renaming a major thoroughfare in his name. Palm Avenue in Hialeah, a city that delivered Trump a staggering 75% of the vote in the most recent election, will now be known as President Donald J. Trump Avenue.
This move is historic and symbolic. Miami-Dade hadn’t voted Republican in a presidential race since Ronald Reagan in 1988, but Trump shattered that trend in 2024, flipping the county by more than 13 percentage points. The shift wasn’t just a fluke—it was the result of a conservative surge among Hispanic voters, particularly Cuban Americans, who resonated with Trump’s messaging on economic opportunity, anti-socialism, and law and order.

The Miami-Dade County Commission voted 9-1 to approve the name change after Hialeah’s city council had already greenlit the proposal last year. Even though Democrats hold the majority on the commission, only one Democrat, Commissioner Marleine Bastien, voted against the measure. Her opposition, rooted in ideological differences, stood no chance against the strong bipartisan support for the change.
Hialeah Mayor Esteban Bovo, a longtime supporter of Trump, celebrated the decision as a recognition of Trump’s impact on the community. “By naming Palm Avenue—a vital artery that runs through the heart of Hialeah and serves as a hub for local businesses and cultural identity—we are forever immortalizing President Trump’s legacy,” Bovo said. He emphasized that this wasn’t just about politics but about values like freedom, prosperity, and opportunity.
Commissioner Kevin Cabrera echoed this sentiment, pointing to the sacrifices Trump made to champion conservative principles that resonated deeply with Hialeah and beyond. Cabrera called the renaming a tribute that will remind future generations of Trump’s fight for the American Dream.
The move has, unsurprisingly, sparked mixed reactions. Supporters hail it as a fitting tribute to a president who reshaped the Republican Party and brought Miami-Dade into the conservative fold. Critics, mostly from the left, argue the decision is divisive.
Regardless of the controversy, President Donald J. Trump Avenue will stand as a lasting reminder of the profound political and cultural shift Trump ushered into South Florida—and perhaps the nation as a whole.
