Joe Biden reemerged on Friday at a Memorial Day event in New Castle, Delaware — his first public appearance since revealing he has metastatic cancer. The 82-year-old former president looked frail and disoriented as he slowly exited his vehicle and made his way to the podium, where he delivered remarks that quickly veered from honoring fallen service members to focusing on himself.
Biden, who left office in January when President Donald Trump was sworn in for a second term, made headlines earlier this year after admitting he has been battling advanced cancer, reportedly linked to a long-undiagnosed case of prostate cancer. His noticeable physical decline was on full display, but it was his words that once again stole the spotlight — for all the wrong reasons.
What was meant to be a solemn occasion quickly turned into a personal tribute to Biden’s son, Beau, who passed away in 2015 from brain cancer at Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland. Despite that, Biden implied Beau died in Iraq, repeating a claim he’s made multiple times — a claim that remains factually false.
“I know for many of you, Memorial Day, like for us, is deeply personal. For the Bidens, this day is the 10th anniversary of loss of my son Beau, who spent a year in Iraq. To be honest, it’s a hard day,” Biden said.
Let’s be clear: Beau Biden served honorably but did not die in combat. Joe Biden is not a Gold Star father, though he continues to insinuate otherwise — a move many view as disrespectful to actual Gold Star families.
At one point, Biden inexplicably began shouting: “I’m an American! That’s who I am! I’m serious about this! I’m not joking!” with no clear context for the outburst. Then, true to form, he fumbled a quote from the Declaration of Independence — another recurring issue throughout his public speaking.
While Biden is no longer in power, his public appearances continue to draw scrutiny, particularly as questions about his health and mental fitness linger. Meanwhile, under President Trump’s leadership, the country is focused on restoring stability, rebuilding the economy, and dealing with the real consequences of the Biden years.
If Friday’s appearance was meant to show strength, it did the opposite. It was a sad reminder of just how far Joe Biden has declined — and how out of touch he remains, even now.
