In a political showdown that resembled more of a verbal cage match than an interview, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) locked horns with CNN host Kaitlan Collins, delivering a performance that left viewers on the edge of their seats. The Texas senator, known for his sharp rhetoric and no-holds-barred style, didn’t disappoint as he launched into a fiery exchange with Collins, accusing her and mainstream media of playing partisan games over election integrity.
The sparks flew early when Collins demanded to know if Cruz would certify the election results in November, should former President Donald Trump lose. “Will you vote to certify the election results, or will you object regardless?” she pressed, determined to corner Cruz into a definitive yes-or-no answer.
But Cruz wasn’t having it. “Kaitlan, I’ve gotta say I think that’s actually a ridiculous question,” he retorted. “No, it’s not, and let me explain… Have you ever asked a Democrat that?” he fired back, questioning the consistency of media scrutiny between the two major parties. Collins attempted to hold her ground, but the scene quickly escalated into a heated back-and-forth, with Cruz pointing out what he sees as a double standard in how Democrats and Republicans are treated regarding election disputes.
He then took viewers on a history lesson, highlighting instances where Democrats themselves had challenged election results. “In 2004, Senate Democrats opposed the reelection of George W. Bush. In 2016, they objected to Donald Trump,” Cruz explained, adding that Hillary Clinton had even called Trump an “illegitimate president.” With each historical reference, Cruz’s argument gained momentum, framing his stance as consistent with historical precedent rather than an anomaly.
The climax came when Cruz blasted the notion that questioning election results equates to undermining democracy. “You’re asking, do you promise no matter what to agree that an election is legitimate regardless of what happens, and that would be an absurd thing to claim,” Cruz shot back. He underscored the point by noting that every state has laws in place to challenge voter fraud, posing the rhetorical question, “Why does every state have laws in place to challenge voter fraud if it occurs?”
Collins, trying to regain control, insisted, “This isn’t a game,” only for Cruz to shout back, “It is a game! You only ask Republicans that,” highlighting his belief that the media plays favorites when it comes to holding politicians accountable.
As the interview drew to a close, Cruz maintained his stance that while he accepted the 2020 election results, he did so with significant reservations about voter fraud—echoing his call for a 10-day commission to review the results, similar to the congressional actions taken in the disputed election of 1876.
