If there was ever a good reason to pull your children out of public schools, let this be it. And don’t tell me that it can’t happen at your school, because it didn’t happen here either until it did. Deer Creek High School in Edmond, Oklahoma is under investigation. And no, it’s not for anything as mundane as cheating on exams or bullying. No, these students were caught on video sucking on the toes of adults during a fundraiser.
Fox 25 obtained the shocking video which shows high school students licking peanut butter off of feet. I mean, I love peanut butter as much as the next guy, but this is just a whole new level of weird. The event was part of a week-long fundraising effort for Not Your Average Joe Coffee, a company that employs people with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities. Now don’t get me wrong, supporting such a cause is commendable, but the method? Not so much.

The school district proudly announced they raised $152,830.38 during the fundraising activities all week. But at what cost, people? At what cost? This is the kind of stuff that gives fundraisers a bad name. Can’t we just stick to bake sales and car washes?
Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters called the incident “disgusting” and assured the public that his agency is investigating. Well, thank goodness for that! It’s about time someone stepped in to clean up this mess.
This incident is a stark reminder of how far some people are willing to go in the name of charity. And while their intentions might have been good, their execution leaves a lot to be desired. Involving children in such bizarre and inappropriate activities is not only unethical, but it also undermines the very cause they were trying to support.
This whole debacle serves as a cautionary tale for schools and organizations everywhere. Fundraising should be fun, yes, but it should also be respectful and appropriate. Let’s hope this incident serves as a wake-up call for everyone involved and that they learn from their mistakes. After all, there are plenty of ways to raise money without resorting to toe-sucking. I mean, have they ever heard of a charity run? Just a thought.
