Just when you thought Judge Arthur Engoron was simply a tough, no-nonsense judge, an old skeleton tumbles out of his closet. A hefty scandal from 2002 has resurfaced, and it’s got everyone’s eyebrows raised higher than a diva’s high notes. Apparently, Engoron, who’s been ruling with an iron fist in the politically charged case against former President Trump, had a bit of a ‘situation’ back in the day. And by ‘situation’, I mean a potentially career-damaging scandal that involves an undisclosed relationship with a secretary. But not just any secretary, mind you. This was the secretary of opposing counsel during a case over which he was presiding. Talk about a plot twist!
According to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, defense attorney Nathan Lewin didn’t take this lying down. He was representing the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada and was none too pleased about several pre-trial decisions that went against his client. Can’t blame the guy, right? He smelled something fishy and pointed fingers at Engoron and the secretary, identified only as Sue, for possibly influencing the case’s outcome.
Here’s the juicy bit: Engoron claimed he started dating Sue on May 10. But Lewin wasn’t buying it. He suspected that Sullivan’s actions in the case may have been influenced by info he received from Sue. Moreover, Engoron was drafting decisions and communicating with the judge about the case during the time he was dating Sue. If that doesn’t scream “conflict of interest,” I don’t know what does.
Fast forward to today, and Engoron is still making waves, especially with his recent ruling involving Trump’s high-profile case. He ordered Trump to cough up over $350 million related to financial misconduct charges. But with the 2002 scandal back in the limelight, one can’t help but wonder: Is there more to Engoron than meets the eye?
This whole thing is a classic drama of potential conflict of interest. And let’s face it, it doesn’t look good for Engoron. While we don’t know what will come of it, I’m willing to bet a box of donuts that this isn’t the last we’ll hear about this scandal.
