You’ve got to hand it to whoever came up with this prank: sending postcards to Kamala Harris supporters saying they’d be “volunteering” to house migrant families. It’s a pretty on-the-nose way to highlight the growing gap between open-border rhetoric and the reality of dealing with an influx of migrants. This little prank may not be changing any minds on immigration policies, but it sure has struck a nerve, especially among the Democrats who usually love to wear their “sanctuary” status as a badge of honor—until the concept comes uncomfortably close to home.
One Harris supporter in Massachusetts was reportedly stunned when she received a postcard that spelled out her alleged commitment to the cause: she’d be housing a family from Nicaragua, complete with a move-in date and a list of food and transportation needs. Suddenly, her front yard slogan had real-life consequences, and let’s just say she wasn’t exactly rolling out the red carpet.

It didn’t stop in Massachusetts. In California’s Fresno County, residents with “Harris-Walz” signs in their yards also got letters designating their homes as “sanctuary residences” if they didn’t take down their signs. The letter was in three languages—English, Spanish, and Arabic—giving it that “official” feel and causing quite a stir among recipients. Carole Laval, a Democrat voter, didn’t take it well. “It’s un-American,” she said, stressing her right to free speech. Laval was understandably upset, yet missed the irony in her reaction. The sanctuary ideals she likely supports are fine for border towns and “someone else’s neighborhood,” but not quite as appealing when they land right at her doorstep.

As amusing (and admittedly provocative) as this prank was, it also reveals a bigger truth. Democrats have long championed lenient immigration policies, often turning a blind eye to the pressures these policies place on local communities. But when these same policies are symbolically brought to affluent or suburban Democrat enclaves? Suddenly, it’s “un-American.” This isn’t about actually sending migrant families to live in their homes, of course, but rather about illustrating how easy it is to support open borders from a distance, while keeping real solutions—like stronger borders or effective immigration reform—at arm’s length.
The prank highlights an uncomfortable double standard that has been at the core of progressive immigration policies for years. Championing open borders from the comfort of a well-protected suburb sounds righteous, but that rhetoric only goes so far. For many of the same folks who got these postcards, maybe this is a reminder that actions (and policies) speak louder than yard signs.
