New reports are challenging Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s claims about his trips to China, particularly his assertion that he was there during the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989. The timing of this revelation, just before the upcoming vice presidential debate, raises questions about Walz’s ties to China and his credibility, and could become a key point of attack.
Walz has frequently spoken about his experiences in China, even recounting in a 2014 congressional hearing that he had been in Hong Kong in May 1989, just before the Chinese government’s brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square. He claimed that witnessing the events unfold from Hong Kong offered him unique insights during a pivotal moment in Chinese history. “It was a very interesting summer to say the least,” Walz said at the time, describing the tense atmosphere and news blackouts that followed the massacre.
However, reports from Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) and The Washington Free Beacon suggest that Walz may not have traveled to China until August 1989, two months after the massacre. Local Nebraska newspapers from May and June of that year indicate that Walz was still in the U.S. during the time of the protests, casting doubt on his story. Photos of Walz touring a National Guard storeroom in Nebraska were published in May 1989, further undermining his claims of being in China during the protests.
Adding to the controversy, CNN, typically an ally of Walz, investigated the matter and confirmed that the Harris campaign could not provide evidence to support Walz’s timeline. When asked how many times Walz had traveled to China, the campaign vaguely stated that the number was “likely closer to 15.”
The timing of this news couldn’t be worse for Walz, as he faces scrutiny for his potential ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). A whistleblower recently disclosed allegations linking Walz to the CCP, leading the GOP-led House Oversight Committee to issue a subpoena to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for documents related to these claims.
If these allegations hold any truth, it could spell political disaster for Walz and the Harris campaign, raising serious questions about his background and undermining the Democrats’ narrative just weeks before the election.
